University Science High School (USHS) is one of the two High Schools of Central Luzon State University (CLSU). It was established on June 14, 1976 as a prime school for students who are inclined to pursue science and technology courses which the country needs for its massive and sustaining development programs. As a transfer student, there are times that I was asked why I chose University Science High School for my Senior High School career. Well, I can say that there’s no denying that USHS is one of the famous schools not only Nueva Ecija but in the Philippines given that this school is producing graduates that are considered achievers in different renowned Universities here in our country.  In fact, I can’t even count how many times I’ve been asked where I study and when I answered CLSU, they’ll just say, “Ah, sa Sci High!” They even say that USHS is an extraordinary school given that most of the students studying here are smart, talented and multi-tasking. Even previously, when I was currently studying at Agricultural Science and Technology School (ASTS) which is one of the two High Schools in CLSU aside from USHS, I have heard a lot like this. So I am a bit challenged knowing that I am going to study in such a school like this. Not to mention, being a transfer student is hard for me because of the difficulties in adjustment not only with the curriculum but also with the people around me. But for now, I can say that I am happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I like my school and these are just the reasons why.

  1. The Uniqueness of Its Curriculum

Although, University Science High School is currently following the K-to-12 Enhanced Basic Education Curriculum, I can tell that its curriculum is unique because of additional areas like research which is being conducted by the students yearly since they were grade seven. This kind of practice will somehow prepare the students for their college career in which they will encounter thesis making.

  1. The school’s Philosophy, Mission, Vision and Objectives

The school believes that education is the prime instrument of the national development and the key to excellence and global competitiveness. The school’s vision is to be at par with secondary science institutions in the Asia-Pacific region. The school’s mission is to develop students who are highly competitive in Math, Science and Technology, and Communication (Asia-Pacific region).

The school’s objectives include: developing student’s scientific attitude, analytical and critical thinking, creativity and innovative abilities, mathematical and communication skills. To develop student’s well-rounded personality – physically, emotionally, socially, spiritually, and culturally prepared to live independently in their highly competitive world. To develop/enhance student’s desirable values for independence and self fulfillment. And lastly, to prepare students for college work. (ushs.clsu.edu.ph)

Generally, I like the school’s objectives to develop students through their intensive learning techniques for them to be highly competitive and to be at par with other secondary science institutions in the Asia-Pacific region.

  1. The Rules and Regulations

The school’s rules and regulations guide the students in their everyday routine within the vicinity of the school. It can also help the students to be responsible in everything that they do. For example, is the SSG Resolution 1 series of 2018, wherein the latecomers for the Monday program are going to receive a punishment like mass work. In that way, the students may avoid being late in school.

  1. The Surroundings or the Environment

As a student, we should also appreciate the little things. Personally, I like the environment surrounding USHS. Given that Central Luzon State University is a “clean and green” university and USHS is within the vicinity of CLSU, I enjoy breathing the fresh air every time I came out of our room. The surroundings are also clean so that I can feel a relaxed and leave stress behind.

  1. The Facilities in General

In general, I like the school’s facilities. They have sufficient comforting air conditioned rooms for every sections. This is where the students acquire knowledge in their everyday lives. In the science laboratory, equipment, apparatuses and tools are complete and accessible. This is one reason why experiments and other activities related to science can be accomplished easily and enjoyably. The students will not only learn through discussions but they can be able to experience a hands-on learning through such activities.

  1. The Computer Laboratory

Personally, I like the computer laboratory of USHS because of its accessibility and fine accomodation. In fact, students are given free access for four hours in a month and they can access it by using a “comcard”, short for computer card. Through this way, the students can be able to do their assignments and other assigned tasks during their free time just by going to the computer room.

  1. The Activities

The school is also organizing activities and programs that can help the students by harnessing their skills and developing their talents.

  1. The Teachers

I like the teachers of USHS not only for their way of teaching but also for being such warm welcoming people. As a transfer student, I feel that I am welcomed because of their hospitality, for helping us and guiding us every time we need something.

  1. The Way of Teaching

USHS way of teaching is different from other schools. I can say that the students are truly engaging in the subject because tasks and activities are given to them which can harness them to become smarter and develop self-confidence through exposure. The school also offers different ways of teaching so that the students can figure out themselves how they learn best.

  1. My Classmates

As a transfer student, having my first step on USHS, on the enrolment day, I am surprised when unexpectedly, two people from our batch never hesitated to know us. They introduced themselves and told us that there’s nothing to worry about. We are a bit shy that but also a bit happy knowing that they’ve welcomed us as their new classmates. I am so happy to meet these incredible people, my classmates. Although considering the fact that they have different attitudes and personality and knowing that I am going to be with them for two years, I am a bit challenge but there is also that feeling of excitement at the same time. For now, I can say that these people that I’m seeing everyday are all great because they were so smart and talented. And I consider the journey of getting to know them as great and exciting.
